Kobelco PREMIARC DW-309L is a premium, rutile-type stainless steel flux-cored welding wire (FCAW) engineered by Kobe Steel. It is a highly specialized industrial consumable designed primarily for dissimilar metal welding (joining stainless steel to carbon/low-alloy steel) and for laying down corrosion-resistant buffer layers prior to cladding.

    Technical Classifications & Settings
AWS Classification: E309LT1-1 or E309LT1-4 (under AWS A5.22).
    EN ISO Standard: EN ISO 17633-A T 23 12 L P C1 1 (or M21 1).
Shielding Gas Options: Optimized to run with either 100% CO? (suffix -1) or a 75%–80% Argon + Balance CO? mixed gas blend (suffix -4).
Operating Polarity: Runs on DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive / DC+).
Welding Positions: All-position wire capable of flat, horizontal, overhead, and vertical-up operations.

    Core Metallurgical Purpose
Because it features a significantly higher Alloy content (~23% Chromium and ~12% Nickel) than standard 308L wires, it acts as a metallurgical buffer.
Dilution Tolerance: When welding stainless to mild carbon steel, the carbon steel heavily "dilutes" the weld pool. The excess Cr and Ni in the DW-309L ensure that even after dilution, the final weld bead retains enough alloying elements to remain strictly austenitic and corrosion-resistant.
Low Carbon (? 0.04%): Minimizes the risk of chromium carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries, preserving maximum resistance to intergranular corrosion.High Ferrite Content: Typically targets a Ferrite Number between 8 to 15 FN, providing massive insurance against hot cracking (solidification cracking) when dealing with highly diluted joints.

    Primary Target Applications
Dissimilar Joints: Joining standard austenitic stainless steels (like AISI 304, 304L, 316) directly to mild carbon steel or low-alloy structural steels.
Buffer Layer Cladding: Depositing an initial underlayment layer on heavy carbon steel vessel walls before applying a top finishing layer of standard DW-308L or DW-316L.
Clad Steel Sheet Welding: Joining the carbon steel backing portion of clad plates to the stainless steel lining interface.

    Key Performance Benefits
Self-Peeling Slag: Utilizes a fast-freezing rutile flux formulation that creates a glassy slag blanket. As the metal cools, the slag cracks and lifts off cleanly by itself, eliminating aggressive wire brushing or chipping.
Flawless Bead Aesthetics: Produces a wide, flat, and exceptionally smooth weld profile with virtually zero spatter, keeping nearby polished stainless steel plates pristine.
