Kobelco PREMIARC DW-309MoL is a premium, rutile-type stainless steel flux-cored welding wire (FCAW) engineered by Kobe Steel. It is a highly specialized consumable designed for dissimilar metal joints and cladding buffer layers that face more aggressive chemical environments than standard 309L wires can handle.
Core Metallurgical Purpose
The addition of Molybdenum (Mo) is the key difference between this wire and standard DW-309L.
Pitting Resistance: The molybdenum significantly boosts the weld metal's resistance to localized pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-rich environments.
Dilution Insurance: When joining stainless steel to carbon steel, the weld pool absorbs a large amount of the unalloyed carbon steel.
The enriched Chromium (~23%), Nickel (~12%), and Molybdenum (~2.5%) chemistry ensures the diluted weld bead stays fully corrosion-resistant and crack-free.
Low Carbon (? 0.04%): Prevents chromium carbide precipitation, safeguarding the weld against intergranular corrosion.
Crack Prevention: Formulated to maintain a high Ferrite Number (typically 8 to 15 FN), which acts as a powerful defense against hot solidification cracking in heavily diluted joints.
Technical Classifications & Settings
AWS Classification: E309LMoT1-1 or E309LMoT1-4 (under AWS A5.22).
EN ISO Standard: EN ISO 17633-A T 23 12 2 L P C1 1 (or M21 1).
Shielding Gas Options: Optimized for either 100% CO? (suffix -1) or a 75%–80% Argon + Balance CO? mixed gas blend (suffix -4).
Operating Polarity: Runs on DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive / DC+).
Welding Positions: All-position wire capable of flat, horizontal, overhead, and vertical-up operations.
Primary Target Applications
Dissimilar Welding: Joining molybdenum-bearing stainless steels (like AISI 316 / 316L) directly to mild carbon steel or low-alloy steels.
Buffer Layer Cladding: Depositing the first underlying layer on carbon steel pressure vessels or chemical tanks before applying a final corrosion layer of DW-316L.
Hard-to-Weld Steels: Welding clad steels and low-alloy steels without requiring intensive preheating.
Key Performance Benefits
Self-Peeling Slag: Utilizes Kobelco's fast-freezing rutile flux system. The glassy slag blanket cracks and lifts off on its own as it cools, minimizing post-weld cleanup.
Spatter-Free Spray Arc: Operates with a smooth, soft spray transfer that eliminates flying spatter, saving time on cleanup and protecting the appearance of the surrounding plates.
