Kobelco TG-X308L is a highly innovative, specialized TIG welding rod designed specifically for non-purging root pass welding. It conforms to the international standard AWS A5.22 R308LT1-5.
Unlike conventional solid TIG rods, this is a flux-cored TIG rod. The internal flux melts during the welding process to form a protective slag layer over the reverse side of the penetration bead, effectively sealing it from atmospheric oxidation.
Key Specifications & Applications
Target Materials: Engineered for joining low-carbon 18%Cr–8%Ni austenitic stainless steels, primarily AISI 304 and 304L. It is also highly compatible with standard 301, 302, and 308 grades.
The No-Purge Advantage: Completely eliminates the need for back shielding gas (Argon purging) during single-sided root runs. This saves massive amounts of downtime, setup time for purging jigs, and gas volume expenses.
Chemical Profile: Contains an extra-low carbon content (? 0.03%) to heavily resist intergranular carbide precipitation and localized corrosion.
Welding Parameters: Operates via Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG) using Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN) with a 100% Argon torch shielding gas.
Common Use Cases: Extensively utilized for root runs in stainless steel process piping systems across breweries, chemical plants, food processing facilities, and oil refineries.
Operating Technique Restrictions
Root Pass Only: Because it produces a slag coating, it is strictly formulated for the initial root pass and must not be used to fill or cap multi-pass joints.
Manipulative Speed: Unlike traditional sluggish solid TIG rods, the TG-X rod must be moved quickly at a very short pitch to allow the liquid slag to flow correctly to the back of the root gap and prevent slag inclusions.
