Kobelco TG-X309L is a specialized, flux-cored TIG welding rod engineered exclusively for non-purging root pass welding. It conforms to the international standard AWS A5.22 R309LT1-5.
While it shares the same flux-cored technology as the TG-X308L, the 309L variant features a highly enriched alloy composition designed for high-stress joining applications.
Key Specifications & Applications
Target Materials: Specifically designed for dissimilar metal joints. It is used to connect austenitic stainless steels (such as 304/304L) to carbon steels or low-alloy ferritic steels.
Buffer Layering: Frequently used for cladding or depositing underlayer buffer passes on carbon steels before applying a standard 308L or 316L top cap layer.
The No-Purge Advantage: Just like the rest of the TG-X series, its internal flux melts to form a protective slag coating over the reverse side of the root bead. This completely eliminates back shielding gas (Argon purging).
Chemical Profile: Formulated with an extra-low carbon profile (? 0.03%) along with a high Chromium (approx. 23–25%) and Nickel (approx. 12–14%) concentration. This high alloy content prevents the weld metal from being overly diluted by the mild steel base plate.
Welding Parameters: Runs using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG) on Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN) polarity with a 100% Argon torch shielding gas.
Critical Operating Procedures
Root Pass Only: Formulated strictly for the initial root pass. Due to its slag system, it cannot be used for the subsequent filling or capping passes of a joint.
Speed and Pitch Control: Standard TIG solid wire techniques will not work here. Operators must feed the rod with a quick, short-pitch travel technique. Moving too slowly traps the molten slag inside the weld pool, leading to slag inclusions.
