WR Rare Earth Tungsten Electrode is a high-performance, completely non-radioactive TIG welding electrode. Identified by its distinctive Purple color code tip, it is infused with a specialized blend of rare earth mixed oxides, making it a universal alternative to hazardous thoriated (red) electrodes.
The WR (often classified as EWG or WR20) is engineered as a multi-purpose, "all-in-one" tungsten needle. Unlike traditional electrodes that specialize in only one current type, the rare earth blend inside the WR allows it to deliver performance across both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) TIG welding.
The main advantage of the WR series is its low electron work function. The rare earth oxide molecules migrate to the tip during welding, allowing electrons to jump across the arc gap under lower starting voltages. This results in fast, contact-free High-Frequency (HF) arc ignition, lower overall tip operating temperatures, and a stable arc cone that resists wandering.
Because it contains zero radioactive components, grinding and sharpening the tip does not create hazardous airborne particles, ensuring a safer workspace.
