WCE20 / WC20 Ceriated Tungsten Electrode is a non-radioactive, professional-grade TIG welding electrode. Doped with 2% cerium oxide, it features a distinctive Grey color code tip and is universally recognized as the industry standard for low-amperage precision welding.
The WCE20 (commonly classified as WC20 or EWCe-2) serves as an excellent, environmentally friendly substitute for radioactive 2% thoriated (red) electrodes. It is highly valued for its exceptional arc ignition properties at extremely low current thresholds. It strikes an effortless, highly stable arc under minimal starting voltages, making it the premier choice for automated orbital tube welding, thin sheet metal fabrication, and delicate electronic components.
Chemically, the 2% ceria distribution lowers the material's electron work function, allowing smooth electron emission without demanding extreme heat inputs. It performs reliably across both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) processes. However, it is structurally engineered for lower-to-medium amperage ranges.
Running WCE20 at excessively high amperages can cause the cerium oxides to migrate rapidly toward the extreme heat at the tip, which depletes the doping compounds and shortens the needle's service life.
